Monday7:00-8:00pm Beginning Poi Gretchen
Monday8:00-9:00pm Intermediate Poi Jen

"Poi" is the Maori word for a ball on a cord that is swung around the body. The Maori are natives of New Zealand and Poi are still used in dance rituals for females, as well as coordination training for Maori warriors before battle (using rocks swung from flax ropes). The beginning class focuses on the use of Poi as a dance form and we will explore the basics of Poi Spinning. The class will focus primarily on positioning of hands, fingers, and wrists, becoming familiar with planes and movement, basic tricks and incorporating these elements into the dance. We will emphasize both the technical aspect as well as the fluidity of the dance. Starting with basic moves on which more difficult moves can be added, we'll learn how to transition from one move to another, thus forming the basics of a personal choreography. The intermediate class will build upon the fundamentals of the beginning class. We will introduce new moves, and focus more on transitioning and choreography. Sorry, due to safety concerns we will not be able to light the Poi in these classes.

The Begining series is taught in 6-week sessions. Please join the series during the 1st or 2nd week only. See Class Schedule for start dates. Intermediate class is on-going and drop-ins are welcome.

Gretchen has been spinning poi and fire dancing since 2000. She moved to Portland in 2002. Gretchen enjoys fire dancing and feels that expression with fire can be a very powerful and grounding activity. Spinning fire is extremely fun to learn and a great way to express yourself though dance and movement.
